The Columbia Icefield in Jasper National Park, Alberta, is one of my favourite places to hike. Although the tourist centre at Athabasca Glacier is extremely busy, few people hike to the base of the glacier and the organized hiking tours on the glacier are typically small, respectful groups. When there’s no one around and all you can see are barren rock, snow, and ice, it’s like being transported to another world.
